Basic Function
The Tompkins County Community Beautification Program is responsible for public gardens and planting areas in Ithaca and surrounding areas in Tompkins County. The summer intern will assist the program to plant and maintain the plantings.
General Responsibilities
- Prepare and plant flowering annuals in public areas.
- Plant flowering annuals and foliage plants in planter boxes on the Commons, W. State St., Cayuga St.
- Plant flowering annuals and foliage plants in planter boxes in front of businesses.
- Maintain plantings throughout the season by deadheading flowers, watering and weeding.
- Assist with program volunteers.
- Promote program with postings on social media.
Educational Opportunities
- Learn about public plantings: Plants suitable, maintenance required.
Supervision/Pay/Hours
- Interns will be supervised by the Tompkins County Community Beautification Program Coordinator Martha Gioumousis and Program Assistant.
- Pay: $9.00-$10.00 per hour; Federal Work Study Eligible students only
- Hours: Up to 30 hours per week, flexible hours to be arranged.
Work Site
The program works at several work sites in downtown Ithaca. Interns are responsible for their own transportation to each identified work site.
Preferred Qualifications
- All majors welcome.
- Experience planting and/or knowledge of plants helpful.
- Volunteers welcome.
The Tompkins County Community Beautification Program is funded by the Tompkins County Tourism Program and administered through Cornell Cooperative Extension of Tompkins County.
