Lasdon Park, Arboretum, and Veterans Memorial, located in Katonah, New York is Westchester’s Public Garden with 234
acres of landscape consisting of ornamental display gardens, containers, orchard, tree and shrub collections, conservatory with
tropical plants and changing exhibitions, greenhouses, forests, meadows, and hiking trails.
The Gardener is an aesthetically driven individual who is positive, energetic, and has a strong work ethic. General knowledge of
garden design, gardening, weeding, planting and watering, and an understanding of public horticulture as an education space for
all patrons is required. Flexible hourly schedule on an as needed basis, must include one weekend day and some holidays. This
position involves public interaction and requires frequent physical labor in varied weather conditions.
Examples of duties:
● Planting, watering, fertilizing, pruning, weeding, propagation, mowing lawns, mulching and caring for trees, flowers,
shrubs and other flora.
● Guidance to patrons visiting the park grounds which include gardens, memorials, trails, exhibits, public programs, and
conservatory.
● Assist in the Garden Shop.
● Regular communication with the park management and gardening team.
● Assist in the supervision and assignment of duties to subordinate employees, such as interns, and volunteers, instructing
them in gardening techniques and in the proper use and care of materials and equipment.
● Adheres to the policies of the Westchester County Department of Parks, Recreation, and Conservation and promotes
safe facility use.
● Performs routine work under specific instructions.
● May assist in directing vehicles entering facility for scheduled programs.
● Inspects and identifies pest problems and with guidance, assist in treating such problems using techniques of Integrated
Pest Management.
● Knowledge and use of hand and power gardening tools and small equipment.
● Uphold high horticultural standards.
Preferred education/experience:
Applicants with experience and/or formal education in the horticultural field are preferred. This job is for someone who
has energy, can take initiative, be creative and will be involved in many aspects of the facility and its public programs.
Valid driver’s license is preferred. Person will work under the direct supervision of the Program Coordinator and as part of
the horticulture team.
HOURLY POSITION: on an as needed basis
SALARY: Minimum$14.10. Commensurate with experience
